About the Institute

Independent, rigorous, long-horizon.

Founded in 2020, the Numalogos Institute operates as a non-partisan research institution dedicated to cross-disciplinary inquiry in the public interest.

A message from the founder

The Numalogos Institute was founded on a single conviction: that the long-term trajectory of human intelligence is too consequential to be left to chance, or to institutions designed for shorter horizons.

Every generation believes it is living through a turning point. Ours is correct. The decisions taken in the next two decades — on artificial intelligence, on human biological capacity, on the governance of civilisational risk — will determine not merely the shape of the century but the question of whether the human story continues at all.

I did not build this Institute because I am pessimistic about that story. I built it because I think we can ensure it. The tools exist. The knowledge exists. What has been lacking is the institutional will to act on a timescale commensurate with the stakes.

Numalogos is that institution.

Our mission

To produce evidence‑based research on complex global systems that no single government, corporation, or academic discipline can undertake alone.

We take a deliberate, long-term view. Our research programme is structured around ten-year inquiry cycles, with interim publications, datasets, and policy briefings released on a rolling basis.

The Institute does not advocate for specific policy positions. We produce, validate, and disseminate research. Interpretation and application are the responsibility of our partners and the public.

All executive summaries, methodological notes, and open datasets are published without fee. Full working papers and partner briefings require registration.

  • Independence No government, corporation, or foundation controls our research agenda or publication schedule.
  • Cross-disciplinary rigour Findings are subjected to internal peer review, external validation, and public methodological disclosure.
  • Long-term stewardship We plan in decades, not quarters. Our institutional structures are designed for continuity across political cycles.
  • Open access Core research outputs are publicly available. We do not place findings behind commercial paywalls.
Governance

How the Institute is structured.

The Institute operates under a dual-board model: a Governing Council responsible for strategic direction and institutional integrity, and an Academic Council responsible for research standards and programme oversight.

Governing Council

Sets institutional strategy, approves annual budgets, oversees the Director-General, and maintains the independence covenants agreed with founding funders. Meets quarterly; minutes are published with a twelve-month delay.

Academic Council

Reviews research proposals, approves methodologies, manages the peer-review process, and oversees the fellowship programme. Composed of senior fellows elected internally on a rotating three-year basis.

Ethics & Review Panel

An independent standing panel that reviews all research programmes for ethical compliance, data privacy, and dual-use risk. Membership is disclosed in the annual report.

Funding & independence

Who funds the Institute.

The Institute accepts funding from foundations, public bodies, and academic institutions subject to our independence covenants. No funder may direct, delay, or suppress research output.

Current funding is drawn from a mix of endowment income, multi-year foundation grants, and government research partnerships. A full breakdown of funding sources is published in our annual report.

We do not accept funding from: commercial entities with a direct financial interest in our research areas; political parties or campaign organisations; entities subject to sanctions.

Our independence covenants are publicly available and legally binding on all funding relationships.
